Science - Function of mountains
Without mountains, the Earth's vibrations can cause catastrophic failure. Thus, the
mountains are gravitational pegs or nails that stabilize the Earth's rotation motion while orbiting along its helical trajectory following the Sun's motion through the space.
Mountains are considered to be the nails that hold the Earth together. This process is known as Isostasy. This is the process of stabilizing the Earth using the stress of gravity from the mountains. They play a major role in keeping the Earth in balance. The above facts have been discovered in the 20th century.
Qur'an - Function of mountains
More than 1400 years ago, the Holy Qur'an stated that mountains are like pegs and prevent the Earth from shaking. Below are some of the verses related to this subject. The verses are clear and speak for themselves.
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِهَـٰدًا وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا
Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse, And the mountains as pegs? 78:6-7
وَجَعَلْنَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ رَوَٰسِىَ أَن تَمِيدَ بِهِمْ وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا فِجَاجًا سُبُلًا لَّعَلَّهُمْ يَهْتَدُونَ
And We placed within the earth firmly set mountains, lest it should shift with them,
and We made therein [mountain] passes [as] roads that they might be guided. 21:31
خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ بِغَيْرِ عَمَدٍ تَرَوْنَهَا وَأَلْقَىٰ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ رَوَٰسِىَ أَن تَمِيدَ بِكُمْ
وَبَثَّ فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ دَآبَّةٍ وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍ كَرِيمٍ
He created the heavens without any pillars that you can see;
He set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; 31:10
وَأَلْقَىٰ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ رَوَٰسِىَ أَن تَمِيدَ بِكُمْ وَأَنْهَـٰرًا وَسُبُلًا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ
And He has set up on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you;
and rivers and roads; that you may guide yourselves; 16:15
وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا
And the mountains as pegs? 78:7
