Religion and Science
Do religion and science contradict one another? It may appear so, largely due to a widespread lack of understanding and politics. Furthermore, the presence of certain corrupted religious texts and teachings that contradict scientific principles exacerbates the issue. However, the true Islam not only affirms scientific truths but also encourages the pursuit of knowledge and scientific advancements for all. To truly comprehend Islam, it is essential to delve into the teachings of the Holy Qur'an rather than relying on media portrayals or the actions of select fanatics or governments.
Abu Rayhan Biruni (973 CE - 1050 CE) stands as one of the most eminent Persian thinkers and scientists in history. In his books, he described the rotation of the earth hundreds of years before anyone else mentioned it. He calculated the radius and circumference of the Earth, and his scientific data was used for centuries in determining precise eclipses and equinox times. With simple experiments, he demonstrated that “vacuum” exists. Using sexagesimal numbering, he was the first person who subdivided the hour into smaller parts such as minutes and seconds. He has written many books on languages, history, biology, geometry, physics, astronomy, mathematics, and many other subjects. Remarkably, almost six centuries prior to Galileo, Biruni posited that the Earth revolves on its axis. What sets him apart from Galileo is that his groundbreaking ideas found acceptance among Islamic scholars of his era. This exemplifies Islam's rich tradition of valuing science and knowledge.
There is no contradiction between science and Islam.
The Holy Qur'an serves as a fascinating insight into the past, present, and future! Although not a scientific manual, it astoundingly contains numerous scientific, social, and ethical truths that were revealed 1400 years ago. Many of these facts were only discovered by scientists in the 20th century! Detailed descriptions of phenomena such as the Big Bang Theory and the stages of human embryo development can be found exclusively in the Holy Qur'an, serving as undeniable signs of God's existence.
.....وَيُرِيكُمْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
"........... and shows you His Signs: perchance you may understand." 2:73
Over 1400 years ago, a forty-year-old man, illiterate but well known for his trustworthiness and a direct descendant and follower of Prophet Abraham (PBUH) lived in Mecca. At that time, only a small group of individuals possessed the ability to read and write. In one occasion when this man sought solace in spiritual contemplation within the cave of Hira, suddenly Archangel Gabriel appeared and commenced the revelation of the Holy Qur'an. Chosen by God as the final promised prophet, following in the footsteps of Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, he came to be known as Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
It would defy logic to claim that he himself authored the Holy Qur'an or that others aided him, considering that approximately 800 verses (equivalent to one-eighth of the entire book) delve into scientific knowledge, nature, Astronomy, and other facts that were yet to be discovered at that time! Moreover, the Holy Qur'an accurately foretold numerous future events, which subsequently unfolded just as they were described in its verses. This is a testament to the fact that the Holy Qur'an truly is the Word of God and serves as a sign for those with understanding. Unlike a technical manual, the Holy Qur'an does not employ the style of technical writing. It, in special terms understandable to people of that era, refers to scientific facts.
The evidence supporting the Holy Qur'an as the divine Word of God and a miraculous revelation lies solely within its verses. There is no reliance on blind faith in this matter. Instead, why not take the initiative to investigate the evidence and personally ascertain these extraordinary miracles? Join us in this journey!
