Movement of the Earth and Tectonic Plates

Imam Jaʿfar al‑Ṣādiq’s (AS) said to Abū Shākir:

“Do you realize that the stones from which you carve your idols came into existence thousands of years ago and will continue to exist for thousands more? These stones did not originate here. They arrived from distant places, carried over long ages because different parts of the earth are constantly moving. This movement is extremely slow, so you do not perceive it. There is nothing in the universe that is motionless. Absolute rest does not exist. Even when we sleep, we are in motion, for the earth itself is in motion. And beyond that, there is motion within our own bodies.”

Scientific depth behind the Imam’s statement

His description anticipates several major scientific principles that were unknown in the 8th century:

  • Tectonic motion — The idea that “different parts of the earth are always moving” aligns precisely with what modern geology calls plate tectonics.
  • Slow, imperceptible movement — The Imam emphasizes that the motion is too slow for human senses to detect, matching the modern understanding that tectonic plates move only a few centimeters per year.
  • Transport of rocks across distances — Modern geology confirms that mountains, stones, and entire landmasses shift over millions of years due to continental drift.
  • Universal motion — His statement that “there is nothing in the universe which is not in motion” reflects a foundational truth of physics: from galaxies to atoms, motion is universal.
  • Internal biological motion — He connects cosmic motion to the motion within the human body, echoing principles of physiology and cellular activity.

None of these scientific concepts were known, discussed, or even imagined in Arabia—or anywhere else—in the 7th and 8th centuries.

Modern plate tectonics was not established until the mid‑1960s, when scientists such as Jason Morgan, Dan McKenzie, and Fred Vine validated the mechanism of seafloor spreading, building on Alfred Wegener’s 1912 hypothesis of continental drift. Tectonic plates are massive slabs of Earth’s lithosphere. They move 1.5 to over 10 centimeters per year—exactly the kind of slow, undetectable motion the Imam described.

This means Imam al‑Ṣādiq (AS) articulated the essence of plate tectonics more than 1,200 years before modern science confirmed it.

Why is the Imam's statement extraordinary?

  • No scientific instruments existed to detect continental movement.
  • No geological theory of drifting continents or moving plates existed.
  • Ancient civilizations believed the earth was fixed and immobile.
  • The Imam’s explanation is not metaphorical—it is scientifically precise.

Within the Shia understanding, such knowledge is part of the ʿilm ladunnī—the divinely granted knowledge given to the Imams as purified Representatives of Allah (SWT). His words to Abū Shākir therefore stand as a profound example of knowledge far beyond the scientific horizon of his time.
