The long story of Prophet Joseph (PBUH) is one of the most fascinating stories you can find. Here, we only focus on 2 short aspects of it.
- The Egyptian ruler of Prophet Joseph's era is called the "king" in the Holy Qur'an. However, all the other Egyptian rulers of Prophet Moses' era are referred to a "Pharaoh" 74 times in the Holy Qur'an. Is there a consistency issue or an oversight here? It was only in modern times that archeological discoveries presented the following fact. During the time of Prophet Joseph (PBUH), the Egyptian rulers were all called "kings". However, beginning around 1570 B.C., long after Joseph's time, the official designation for the kings changed to "Pharaoh"! Isn't that amazing how the Holy Qur'an distinguishes these two eras?
- Here's a brief summary of a section of the story. While Prophet Joseph (PBUH) was wrongly jailed, the king was haunted by a troubling dream. He dreamt that 7 fat cows are eaten by 7 skinny ones; and there are 7 green ears of grain along with 7 dry ones. No one was able to interpret it. A person who was aware of Prophet Joseph's extraordinary ability to interpret dreams informed the king. Eventually, prophet Joseph (PBUH) was brought to the king's court to interpret the dream. He informed the king of 7 years of good crops followed by 7 years of extreme hardships and famine. Eventually he was put in charge of planning and managing the upcoming disaster. In Sura 12, verses 47-48, the prophet advises to plant grain for 7 years but leaving them in the ear except a little set aside for eating. After that, it will be 7 years of hardship. During the hardship, they should consume what they stored and save a little (seeds) to plant after the 7 years of hardship.
Modern science has proven that leaving the grain in its husks protects it from spoilage and pests! That is exactly what Prophet Joseph (PBUH) recommended.
وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلِكُ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰ سَبْعَ بَقَرَٰتٍ سِمَانٍ يَأْكُلُهُنَّ سَبْعٌ عِجَافٌ وَسَبْعَ سُنۢبُلَـٰتٍ خُضْرٍ وَأُخَرَ يَابِسَـٰتٍ
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمَلَأُ أَفْتُونِى فِى رُءْيَـٰىَ إِن كُنتُمْ لِلرُّءْيَا تَعْبُرُونَ
And [subsequently] the king said, "Indeed, I have seen [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven [that were] lean, and
seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry. O eminent ones, explain to me my vision, if you should interpret visions." 12:43
قَالَ تَزْرَعُونَ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ دَأَبًا فَمَا حَصَدتُّمْ فَذَرُوهُ فِى سُنۢبُلِهِۦٓ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ
[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat. 12:47
ثُمَّ يَأْتِى مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ سَبْعٌ شِدَادٌ يَأْكُلْنَ مَا قَدَّمْتُمْ لَهُنَّ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّمَّا تُحْصِنُونَ
Then will come after that seven difficult [years] which will consume what you saved for them, except a little from which you will store. 12:48
