Science - The Night Journey and Sirius


Sirius Stars

The Sirius A and B stars are in a binary system and have elliptical orbits around a common virtual barycenter. Apastron refers to the position of stars on their orbits where they are farthest from each other. Periastron is the term referring to the position of stars on their orbits where they are closest to each other. The cycle from one Periastron to the next, and similarly from one Apastron to the next, spans approximately 49 solar years.  Scientifically, the most recent time that the Sirius stars were at Apastron position was 2019.29 CE and at the Periastron position in 1994.31 CE. 


Jay B. Holberg (a senior research scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory of the University of Arizona in Tucson), in his book titled “Sirius Brightest Diamond in the Night Sky”, says that Long-term continuous observations are needed for determining the more precise orbital period.


For Sirius, scientists agree that almost 50 years of continuous observations is needed! The recent data collected by the European Space Agency over 3 years, produces a 1% uncertainty (margin of error) in today’s scientific calculations related to Sirius. 


Scientifically, the orbital period of Sirius is

between 49.9 and 50 years but it is closer to 50! The exact number is unknown.

History

Abu Rayhan Biruni (973 CE-1050 CE) is one of the most distinguished Persian thinkers and scientists.  In his book “الاثارالباقیه عن القرون الخالیه”, also known as “Chronology of Ancient Nations”; Biruni describes in detail the calendar systems of many civilizations. Approximately 200 years prior to the usage of the current Islamic Hijri Calendar, the ancient Arabs were following the lunar months but they started introducing intercalation into the order of the months. They always preferred the time of the great pilgrimage to Mecca to coincide with when their merchandise would be ready for the market (e.g., fruit, leather, etc.) instead of the true month of pilgrimage (Dhu al-Hijjah). The underlying reason to shift the months was due to political, financial, and social factors.  Biruni explains that when the prophet migrated (Hijra) from Mecca to Medina, the turn of intercalation had come to the month of “Shaban” so the month of “Shaban” was called “Muharram” and month of “Ramadhan” was called “Safar” (almost a jump of 5 months). 


Biruni says that almost 10 years later at the time of the Farewell (or final) Pilgrimage, the order of the months had finally returned to its true natural order so the system could be changed without any drastic impact on customs, pilgrimage, fasting, and economy. 


Sura 9, verses 36 and 37 specifying the correct number of months (12) in a year and prohibiting the intercalation had been already revealed to the prophet a year or so prior to the Farewell Pilgrimage but he had waited for Allah’s permission to enact the rule at the proper time.  


At the conclusion of the final pilgrimage, in the year 10 AH (631/632 CE), the prophet addressed the people by saying that “The season, the time has gone around as it was on the day of Allah creating the heavens and the Earth” meaning that intercalation had to be ended. The “Farewell Pilgrimage” is also called the “Correct Pilgrimage” since at that time the so-called month of “Dhu al-Hijjah” happened to coincide with the true “Dhu al-Hijjah”!  From that point on, the intercalation (“Nasi”) was prohibited in Islam and the months followed their natural sequential order.  


A couple of years later, after the prophet had passed away, the “Hijra” (the year when the prophet migrated from Mecca to Medina) was officially adopted as the starting reference point of today’s Islamic Hijri Calendar. Biruni provides multiple reasons why Hijra was chosen as the calendar’s starting point instead of other important historical events such as the Night Journey or the year that Allah (SWT) appointed Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as the last prophet. The important reason is that Hijra was the most recent and accurate date compared to the other events that had occurred years prior to it during the intercalation.  After Hijra (for 13 years), proper records of years and intercalated months had been kept by Muslims, so they were able to accurately trace back to Hijra. 


The date of the Night Journey (prior to Hijra)  falls within the era of intercalation

and cannot be precisely pinpointed regardless of the various narrations!   


Please note that digital calendar converters must not be used for dates prior to 10 AH or 631/632CE (e.g., the year when intercalation stopped) due to the intercalation problem discussed above. The reconstruction of any true Arabian calendar before the abolition of the intercalation is basically impossible. 


Qur'an - The Night Journey and Sirius

The Night Journey is about the miraculous journey of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the true worshipper (“عَبْدِ”) of Allah (SWT), to the unseen heavens when he was still living in Mecca (before Hijra).  The purpose of this web page is not to delve into the details of the story.  The Night Journey is introduced in Chapter 17 (Night Journey) but most of the details are in 16 verses of Sura 53 (Star).


Total of seventeen verses are related to the Night Journey.  The evidence is provided in the research paper.



Sura 17 (Verse 1)  and  Sura 53 (verses 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 49)



“Exalted is He who took His true worshipper  (prophet) by night from the House of Worship (“al-Masjid al-Haram” in Mecca)

to the Remote House of Worship (“al-Masjid al-Aqsa” in Jerusalem), whose surroundings I have blessed,

to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.” 17:1

 

“By the star that rises (and sets)”  53:1
“Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred” 53:2
“(Archangel Gabriel) One of soundness, and he rose to (his) true form” 53:6
“While he (Gabriel) was in the highest part of heavens” 53:7
“Then he (Gabriel) approached and descended” 53:8

"And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer" 53:9
“Then Allah revealed to His
true worshipper what He had revealed (through) Gabriel” 53:10
“The (prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw.” 53:11

In addition to its traditional meaning, Verse 53:9 in the above list may suggest two arcs on the elliptical orbit of Sirius stars.


فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَى

"And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer" 53:9



Orbital period of Sirius

You can envision the contents of Holy Qur’an as a complex woven web of verses interconnecting each other through the “subjects being discussed”, “mathematical relationships”, “letters and words”, “tones”, and other things based on different codes. Mathematical coding is like a multi-layer encryption connecting verses across suras with prime numbers and divisors. We emphasize that some of the Holy Qur’an's contents (but not everything that some folks have claimed), verse numbers, words, and letters are miraculously related to and coded mathematically with the prime number 19. However, you can think of it as one of the many encryption keys or passwords used in the Holy Qur’an. 


Sura 53 is named the "Star" and its Verse 49 directly names Sirius. Additionally, Verse 53:9 in the same sura may also be attributed to this binary star system and the position of its stars on their orbits (see the above picture).  Based on the unique style of Holy Qur’an and often existence of certain mathematical relationships between specific verse/sura numbers and their contents, one could contemplate that the above verses (9 and 49) together may provide an important clue. Is there any hidden mathematical relationship between them? If you place the verse numbers 9 and 49 next to each other in their ascending order where they appear in Sura 53, they form the palindrome number 949. After dividing 949 by 19, we surprisingly get:

 

949  =  ( 19   x   49.947368421052631578947368421053 )


Amazingly the number 
49.947368421052631578947368421053 begins with the whole number 49 along with a 30-digit fraction portion ending with 53. The fraction does not repeat. 


It is as the Holy Qur’an is encapsulating the orbital period by number 49 (Verse 49) and number 53 (Sura 53)! 


Additionally, the entire number (49.947368421052631578947368421053) is between 49.9 and 50 but it is very close to 50; meeting the scientific criteria for the orbital period of Sirius.


This is not a scientific method. It looks random, and at this point, it is just an interesting idea and a huge leap of faith. Therefore, we need to provide more proof.  This, along with 40 scientific, historical and mathematical evidence are provided in the "Articles" section of this website.   




Let’s take the above detailed orbital period 49.947368421052631578947368421053,  ignore the decimal point and factorize the full 32-digit number:

49947368421052631578947368421053 = 17 × 92639 × 720793 × 9277843 × 4742553647369


Incredibly, the above 32-digit number is divisible by the above
five prime numbers including prime number 17 which happens to be the total number of verses related to the Night Journey and also represents Sura number 17  where the Night Journey is introduced! Additionally, 17 is one of prime numbers that is used in the encryption of the Holy Qur’an. Isn’t that amazing?! Number 17 is one of the few Fermat Primes and it is used in Cryptography.


Adding the digits of the 30-digit fraction portion of the calculated orbital period 947368421052631578947368421053

(9+4+7+3+6+8+4+2+1+0+5+2+6+3+1+5+7+8+9+4+7+3+6+8+4+2+1+0+5+3) = 133


where 133 = 7 x   19       As you can see, Qur'anic code 19 shows up again!  Are all of these coincidence?  Obviously, we need to provide further proof.


Timing of the Night Journey and prophet's birthday

As we saw above in the Science section, the most recent time that the Sirius stars were at Apastron position was 2019.29 CE.  Now, let’s begin with the year 2019.28 CE and step backwards in the history, each time subtracting our calculated orbital period of Sirius 49.947368421052631578947368421053  years, to determine the previous times in the history when the two stars had also been in the Apastron position (approximately every 49.9 years). Do they point to any important historical dates?! 



Aren’t you surprised that both the years 620 CE and 570 CE appear in the above calculations?!

Isn’t that incredible?


It would be illogical to think that it is just a coincidence! As you can see above,


Sirius A and B were at the Apastron (farthest) in the years 620.7536 CE (Night Journey) and 570.8063 CE (prophet’s birthday). 

 

This research strongly suggests that the Night Journey occurred in the leap year 620 CE (620.7536). Using scientific moon data for 620.7536 CE (full 32 digit 620.75368421052631578947368421052), the Night Journey was at 20:21:43 pm, on Wednesday, October 1, 620 CE (during the heliacal rising of Sirius). At that time, Sirius A and B were at the Apastron position forming two perfect bows (Verse 53:9) with one being

closer than the other! It was also during the heliacal rising of Sirius agreeing with 53:1.


The scientific moon data going back to the year 620.7536 CE shows that it was a moonless night.  At 22 pm, the new moon was born and it was visible on the next day.  The same exact astronomical event (Sirius A and B being farthest away from each other - Apastron) occurred both in the year when the prophet was born, and approximately 49 years later when the Night Journey happened! 


Both 620 CE and 570 CE coinciding with the Sirius stars being at Apastron is not random! Also,

 both of the above dates coinciding with the summer heliacal rising of Sirius agrees with Verse 53:1.

This is one of the incredible hidden gems of the Holy Qur'an!


It gives a great amount of credibility to our calculated orbital period of 49.9473. Based on the above calculations, another interesting fact is that at the time of the Night Journey, the prophet may have been approximately 49 years old! Again, number “49” is involved (Verse 49)


Based on the scientific date of 1994.31 CE with 2-decimal digit resolution, the calculated year 570.8063 (570.80631578947368421052631578946) points to 7:19:34 am, Tuesday, October 21, 570 CE. At that time, Sirius A and B were at the Apastron position, forming two perfect bows!


Fiery red Sirius

Sirius is normally white to blue white in color but Ptolemy described it as a fiery red star in 140 CE. An ancient (100 BC) Chinese text by Sima Qian also refers to the change of color of the star. There are many theories regarding this color change. One of the plausible theories suggests the possibility of a third companion body or a comet with a long orbital period of thousands of years. The tidal interaction and the iron rich space dust during close encounter with Sirius A and B (once every couple of thousand years) in the inner part of its orbit could cause cosmic cloud expansion resulting in temporary red color for centuries. For the color to change from white to fiery red, a 3rd orbiting object (or a comet) must have been present in the inner part of the orbits of Sirius A and B. It means during the time when Sirius A and B were at Periastron (closest to each other). The entire process would take a couple of centuries   leading to its reported peak fiery red around 140 CE and then gradually getting less red over hundreds of years.


We saw previously how verses 9 and 49 led to the orbital period of 49.9473 years for Sirius. Scientifically, the most recent time the Sirius stars were at Periastron (closest to each other) was in the year 1994.31 CE. If you go backwards in time subtracting (each time) our calculated period of 49.9473 years from 1994.31 to calculate the other times when the two stars have been at Periastron then you arrive at the year 146.2573 CE which is perfectly within the window of time in Ptolemy’s report (in 140 CE). Absolutely amazing!



A Mathematical Miracle

The story of Night Journey is introduced in Sura 17 (Night Journey), Verse 1 and picks up again in Sura 53 (Star),  Verse 1.  What is the distance between Sura 17, Verse 1 and Sura 53, Verse 1 in terms of verses?  The sum of the total verses of Sura 17 up to and including Sura 52 plus the first verse of Sura 53 is below.  For example, Sura 17 has 111 verses, Sura 18 has 110 verses and so on to Sura 52 which has 49 verses.


 (111 + 110 + 98 + 135 + 112 + 78 + 118 + 64 + 77 + 227 + 93 + 88 + 69 + 60 + 34 + 30 + 73 +

54 + 45 + 83 + 182 + 88 + 75 + 85 + 54 + 53 + 89 + 59 + 37 + 35 + 38 + 29 + 18 + 45 + 60 + 49) = 2755


Adding the first verse of Sura 53 to the above, brings it to 2756

 

2756 = 22 × 13 × 53  


Amazingly the prime number 53 is one of the factors

and it also represents the Sura number that the story of Night Journey picks up again!




The verses that were used in the above calculation are associated with suras 17 through 53 (37 suras).  Let's add it to the above sum:


 2756 (total verses) + 37 (total suras) = 2793 which it is equal to   3 x 19 x 49


As we know, the prime number 19 is one of the encryption codes in the Holy Qur’an

and 49 could represent Verse 49 of Sura 53 where Sirius is named!


Suras 17, Verse 1 points to Sura 53


Why is it important?  The story Night Journey is introduced in Sura 17:1 and it continues in Sura 53.  Therefore, suras 17 (Night Journey) and

53 (Star) are associated in terms of Night Journey.  Mora than 1400 years ago, a standard Gematrical system had been implemented for different languages such as Arabic, Greek, etc. In this system, each letter of the alphabet is assigned a unique value. The system is called “Abjad numerals” for Arabic. For example, the Arabic letter “A” has a value of 1 and letter “D” has a value of 4. Below, please see the standard table of Arabic Gematrical values.



Now, let's examine Sura 17:1 which introduces the Night Journey and find its Gematrical value.



سُبْحَـٰنَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَسْرَىٰ بِعَبْدِهِۦ لَيْلًا مِّنَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ إِلَى ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْأَقْصَا

 ٱلَّذِى بَـٰرَكْنَا حَوْلَهُۥ لِنُرِيَهُۥ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِنَآ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ

The sum of Gematrical values of Verse 17:1 (above) is 4717.

The name of Sura 53

Remember that the suras were named by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) more than 1400 years ago.  Sura 53 is called “the Star” ( ٱلنَّجْمِ ).  In addition to describing some details of the Night Journey, it also mentions the star "Sirius" in Verse 49.  The Sirius system is a binary star system consisting of two components: Sirius A and Sirius B.  Being the first 'white dwarf' ever, Sirius B was discovered in 1862 CE. Let's find its Gematrical value of its name ( ٱلنَّجْمِ ).


(1+30+50+3+40) = 124   which is   2 x 62  but what do the factors represent?  The name of the Sura is hinting that there are two stars and the total verses of the sura is 62!

Discovery of Sirius B

With the knowledge and permission granted by Allah (SWT), American telescope-maker and astronomer Alvan Graham Clark discovered Sirius B in 1862. On January 31, 1862, while testing a new 470 mm aperture refractor telescope, he made the first ever observation of a white dwarf star (Sirius B). The year 1862 is amazingly divisible by 49, 19, and 2. 

 

You can see:                                                   1862  = 2 x  19  x  49

 

·       Code number “19” is involved. 

·       Number “49” represents Verse 49 of Sura 53 describing Sirius and its orbital period. 

·       Number “2” is possibly pointing to the second star (Sirius B); meaning that Sura 53 is describing 2 stars
